SVEVIND and the Akimat of Mangystau region sign a memorandum of understanding relating to giant green hydrogen facilities in the Mangystau region, Western Kazakhstan
The German investor and leading project developer SVEVIND Energy GmbH (“SVEVIND”) and the Akimat of Mangystau region have signed a memorandum of understanding regarding SVEVIND’s plan to develop and realise mega-sized facilities for producing green hydrogen by utilising the vast resources of wind and solar power in the Mangystau region. SVEVIND plans to install wind and solar farms of 30 gigawatt (GW) in this region. The green electricity will feed electrolysers with a capacity of about 20 GW to produce green hydrogen. The green hydrogen can either be exported directly to the ever-growing Eurasian markets or used locally to produce high-value green products, like ammonia, steel or aluminium. The Mangystau county is perfectly suited to realize the mega sized projects given its extraordinary natural resources, available land areas and existing infrastructure. The Mangystau region has a long history to deliver energy and minerals to global markets as it is rich in oil and natural gas as well as deposits of minerals.
SVEVIND presented its plans to the Akim of Mangystau region, Mr. Trumov, during consultations with the Akimat in Aktau on July 2 and during meetings on July 3 which were hosted by Mr. Sklyar, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other high ranked members of the Kazakh government. During these meetings, SVEVIND and the Akim of Mangystau region signed a memorandum of understanding in which the parties agreed detailed cooperation and full commitment to the visionary project.
During the meeting Mr. Trumov noted that the alternative sources are one of the most promising resources that may in the future replace all traditional methods of energy production. The issue of hydrogen energy development is a new and promising direction, which fully meets all the strategic objectives of the country and the region – said the Akim of the Mangystau region.
SVEVIND`s majority owner and CEO Mr. Wolfgang Kropp said “SVEVIND aims to combine the outstanding natural resources in the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan with SVEVIND’s long-time experience and passion in project development and realisation to supply Kazakhstan and Eurasia with green, sustainable energy and products, ‘powered by nature’. The green hydrogen facilities will lift Kazakhstan among the global leaders of renewable energy and green hydrogen.” SVEVIND has been developing and realising extra-large scale onshore wind power projects in Scandinavia since 1998. The “Markbygden 1101” cluster of connected wind farms in Northern Sweden, west of the city of Piteå, is the largest wind farm in Europe, having already reached the 1 GW milestone of operational wind turbines earlier this year with 1.5 GW of wind turbines under construction. In June 2021, SVEVIND also signed a memorandum of understanding with Kazakh Invest National Company JSC confirming its support for SVEVIND’s project pipeline of 30 GW of green hydrogen projects in Kazakhstan.
